Whilst performing flight BY-83 from Montego Bay to London Gatwick with 301 people on board and at FL410 over the Atlantic Ocean the crew observed the number one (left hand) engine rolled back by 30%-40% N1. a short time later the crew received an EICAS message "L END THU EICAS" message. The crew declared an emergency and diverted to Gander, the engine recovered during the descent through FL340 however, the crew decided to continue the divert. The engine required a replacement ECU.
